Mustard on the Hedge

Former tennis champion, Martina Navratilova, is currently sitting in an Australian jungle. The 52 year old signed up as a contestant on the UK reality TV show “I’m a Celebrity, Get me Out of Here”. I caught an episode the other night and was impressed- she was really likable and I’d say she has a good chance of winning.

The show sees two camps of celebrities on list C through Z battle for public votes as they camp in the jungle with limited rations and battle each other in daily “bushtucker trials” for extra food. Trials are similar to those on “Fear Factor” with regular ‘let’s make the viewers regurgitate their dinner as you try to eat kangaroo testicle” challenges.

Maybe Martina was hit on the head by one too many flying balls during her time- she signed up for the show having never seen an episode! At least she’s in good company. Her camp as been ingeniously called “Camp Camp” as one of her fellow jungle buddies is none other than Star Trek’s George Takei. The camp earned it’s name as the contestants discussed sexuality, including residual stigmas surrounding being gay and civil partnerships.

“Look around this camp,” said Simon Webbe. “You’ve got a head of police, a famous actor and one of the world’s best tennis players so it’s not like you can’t do things as good as a straight person….”Shall we call it the camp camp?” Eloquent or what!?

Martina is kicking ass- she beat a younger gal in a bushtucker trial and has shown she’s still in shape by doing a few hundred push-ups. Here’s hoping Martina captivates the British public and goes on to win!
